Ghostlight Productions Shakespeare Abington Park Scranton

Every year in late May and early June we are given something special here in Clarks Summit thanks to Ghostlight Productions and their vision for Shakespeare in the Park. Ghostlight productions pours months of planning into their production and this year is probably the most extravagent production they have ever put on. Ghostlight productions is the brain child of a husband and wife team Jonathan and Rachel Strayer and I believe they have been doing this for about 6 years. Each year over 1000 people come to Abington Park in Clarks Summit to see their latest rendition of a Shakespeare play. Every year their show gets bigger and bigger and I believe this year they had the biggest crowd they have ever had.

What exactly is Shakespeare in the Park?

New York Shakespeare Festival or Shakespeare in the Park is the cornerstone series of the New York City theatrical producing organization known as the Public Theater and happens every summer at the outdoor Delacorte Theater in Central Park. Built in 1961 and opened in 1962 the Delacorte hosts free performances of Shakespearean plays by the Public under Joseph Papp, that Shakespearean works should be available to everyone.  Originally called the New York Shakespeare Festival under new re-organization and branding, the Public dropped “NYSF” from its name, and has labelled its Delacorte operations as simply “Shakespeare in the Park”

What play is being put on in Clarks Summit this year?

Macbeth (full title The Tragedy of Macbeth) is a tragedy written by William Shakespeare, and is considered one of his darkest and most powerful works. Set in Scotland, the play dramatizes the corrosive psychological and political effects produced when evil is chosen as a way to fulfil the ambition for power.

The play is believed to have been written between 1599 and 1606, and is most commonly dated 1606. The earliest account of a performance of what was probably Shakespeare’s play is the Summer of 1606, when Simon Forman recorded seeing such a play at the Globe Theatre.[1] It was first published in the Folio of 1623, possibly from a prompt book. It was most likely written during the reign of James I, who had been James VI of Scotland before he succeeded to the English throne in 1603. James was a patron of Shakespeare’s acting company, and of all the plays Shakespeare wrote during James’s reign, Macbeth most clearly reflects the playwright’s relationship with the sovereign.

Macbeth is Shakespeare’s shortest tragedy, and tells the story of a brave Scottish general named Macbeth who receives a prophecy from a trio of witches that one day he will become King of Scotland. Consumed by ambition and spurred to action by his wife, Macbeth murders King Duncan and takes the throne for himself. He is then wracked with guilt and paranoia, and he soon becomes a tyrannical ruler as he is forced to commit more and more murders to protect himself from enmity and suspicion. The bloodbath and consequent civil war swiftly take Macbeth and Lady Macbeth into the realms of arrogance, madness, and death.

Shakespeare’s source for the tragedy is the account of King Macbeth of Scotland, Macduff, and Duncan in Holinshed’s Chronicles (1587), a history of England, Scotland and Ireland familiar to Shakespeare and his contemporaries, although the events in the play differ extensively from the history of the real Macbeth. In recent scholarship, the events of the tragedy are usually associated more closely with the execution of Henry Garnett for complicity in the Gunpowder Plot of 1605.[2]

In the backstage world of theatre, some believe that the play is cursed, and will not mention its title aloud, referring to it instead as “the Scottish play”. Over the course of many centuries, the play has attracted some of the most renowned actors to the roles of Macbeth and Lady Macbeth. It has been adapted to film, television, opera, novels, comic books, and other media.

Epicurean Delight Scranton PA Wedding Caterer Interview:

DSB: Thanks for joining us today Cliff! Tell us a little bit of yourself and Epicurean Delight! My name is Cliff Daniels. My brother Dave and I started The Epicurean Delight in 1981. We started catering by doing small dinner parties for friends of our parents and quickly, over the next few years through word of mouth, became the largest off premise caterer in NEPA. Myself, my wife Carla, and Dave lead a dedicated team of 6 full time and up to 40 on call staff.
DSB: That’s a beautiful beginning! Looking back, where do you draw your inspiration from? My parents were always imaginative, adventurous, great cooks. Hours each day were spent on meal preparation. They were also avid gardeners. We were definitely the first kids in the neighborhood to have a real French cassolet or black bean soup for dinner. Dinner was a really big deal, served every night at the same time, and usually with a guest or two. This is where our love for great food came from and made us relentlessly interested in food.
DSB: How do you translate that rich history and sense of joy into your work at Epicurean Delight? We continue to grow and learn and improve, that’s what makes us good cooks and great caterers. I look back over the years and can honestly say we improve each year. Interest and improvement like this is only possible if you love what you are doing like we do. Our presentations are dynamic, unusual and vibrant. Our food is creative and flavorful and our service is energetic and friendly.
DSB: What do you feel sets you apart from traditional catering options when it comes to planning wedding meals? We do things the longer way, the right way, no short cuts. We travel with full kitchens, cooking mass amounts of foods to order at serving time. This is one of the important things that really sets us apart.
DSB: What tokens of beginner advice can you give couples who are trying to make plans for the wedding? My first piece of advice to a couple planning a wedding and selecting a caterer is taste the food. We run prospective clients through a tasting of about 17 different items in our lovely tasting room. This gives the client a chance to get to know us and see our work and taste our food.
DSB: What other things are relevant when choosing your wedding caterer? Secondly, once you have selected a caterer, rely on their expertise. They have been doing this for many years and have lots of great ideas and advice for you!
DSB: In closing, what’s the most important thing you can share with couples? Third, choose the best in class for your piece of mind, so you can truly relax and enjoy your special day.

Thanks so much to Cliff, Carla and the entire staff and team at Epicurean Delight for sharing your story and expertise with us today! You can follow Epicurean Delights stories and view their delicious food photography here on Facebook and on their personal website.

Tim Burton Wedding | Mountain Springs Lake Resort

Michelle & Brad

This Tim Burton wedding was truly inspired. The wedding took place at the fabulous Mountain Springs Lake Resort in the Poconos on a beautiful spring day last week. Michelle & Brad are a very unique couple and last year I worked with them for their engagement pictures. They decided to theme their engagement pictures and at the time they were thinking about having a very traditional wedding. When I arrived last week at Mountain Springs Lake Resort for their wedding I almost passed out when I saw what the day would entail. I walked in the front door and was surrounded by fairies. It was like I walked straight on the set of a Tim Burton movie. Every detail was thought about and executed to perfection. It was a great way to kick off wedding season here in PA.

Michelle decided to have her wedding at Mountain Springs Lake Resort because she lives right across the street from the entrance.  It was a really convenient place to have her wedding. She decided to have a small wedding with limited guests. In total there was around 70 people at this wedding which made it very intimate and relaxed. I love a small wedding and Mountain Springs Lake Resort is the perfect place for an intimate wedding. The venue is truly breathtaking and the staff is always awesome to work with.

I wish I could post more pictures from this wedding, but these images have been promised to a wedding magazine that will be featured later this summer. For now, these are the images that I did not submit that I hope will give you a small glimpse into this wonderful wedding and day.
